We all know how annoying Ads can be on the screen of your Android device. The tiny screen, the never ending ads; it’s a nightmare! Although they are a way for app developers to make a living, and everyone should support them by any means necessary (buying premium apps, donating or clicking when you are really interested), they can be annoying and playing a game, using an app or just surfing can be quite irritating. Now, I’ll show you how to remove these ads from your Android phone,
but keep in mind, there are different methods of blocking ads on rooted Androids and un-rooted Androids. While for rooted phones, all you have to do is install another app that takes care of the ads, on a un-rooted phone, the options are not that simple.

1. AdFree

This app is available on the Android Market and it’s really effective. You don’t have to spend too much time customizing it and it does the job really good (just download it from the Android Market and after install, click “Download & Install Hosts”. Although, for AdFree to work on your phone, you have to have it rooted. AdFree uses MVPS HOSTS file to filter the information and add to its blacklist the ads. After installing AdFree you must install the HOSTS file and restart your device, you also have to restart after any custom change to the app (such as manually adding an ad address to the blacklist). The coolest feature of this app is the possibility to set it to update itself every day, so you never have to update it yourself. Another cool feature of AdFree is that it blocks ads not only from your apps, but also from your Android browser. At this time, other browsers are not supported.

2. AdAway

AdAway is another app that takes care of those unwanted ads from your Android apps. As with AdFree, this app only works on rooted phones. AdAway is simple to use and it offers users an ad free Android. All you have to do is install the app, update it by clicking “Download files and apply ad blocking” and you’re all set. The option to manually add a domain is also available, and after each modification, for it to take effect, you have to restart your device. The interface of the app is very intuitive and the best part about it is that after you install it, you can forget it until the next update. Keep in mind, when you want to uninstall the app, you have to deactivate it first, if not, after you uninstall it, the ads will remain blocked.
These are 2 methods to remove ads from your apps, they only work for rooted phones, although, if you did not root your phone, there is a way to get rid of some ads, but only from your browser, not the best solution, but if you do lots of browsing, it might come in handy sometime.

3. Browser Filters

If do not have a rooted phone, then the possibility to remove ads from your smartphone is greatly reduced. The only option you have left is to create a browser filter to this. This option has been tested on both Opera and Firefox and they work pretty well.
On Firefox, all you have to do is go to add-ons and install the Adblock Plus extension and your all set. On the other hand, with Opera Mobile you have to put some muscle into it. You have to create a file called urlfilter.ini on your SD card (or, better yet, in the Opera folder) and in it, add the domains you want to block or search for these lists on the web. After doing so, you must open Opera, write in the url bar opera:config and then search for URL filter, after this, you will see a bar asking you where the filter is located, there, click browse and point to your urlfilter.ini. After a reboot, your Opera Mobile filter is created.
These are the 3 main options you have if you want to remove ads from your Android apps. Although these are annoying sometime, I strongly suggest that you buy or donate when possible to the app designers.

Are you confused with all this fuss on resistive and capacitive touch screens coming with the smart phones these days? Let me try to help you out in choosing which may work best for you.

First of all, let me try to explain what a Capacitive touch screen and a Resistive touch screen is, in scientific terms.

Capacitive touch screen: The capacitive touch screen is made up of a glass panel that is coated with a material.
The property of this material is that it can store electrical charge. So the capacitive touchscreens basically stores electrical charge.
But for good, Human body can also store charge. So, when you touch this screen with your finger, some of these charges on the screen gets transferred to your finger. The oscillator circuits located at the corner of your system will then sense this decrease in the charge on screen and the spot the exact location where touch occurred, and then transfers this specified information to the touchscreen driver software.
Example: iPhone series uses a Capacitive touch screen

Resistive touch screen:
Resistive touch screen, on the other hand is again made up of normal glass panel. However, this glass panel in this case is coated with three layers.

Two of these layers being conductive and resistive are kept apart using spacers while the third scratch-resistant layer covers the whole setup

When the resistive touch screen system is running, current flows through these layers. On a finger touch, the two layers get connected and change in electrical field occurs. The system calculates the coordinates of point of contact and passes them to touch screen driver software.

Now that you understand how Capacitive touch screen and Resistive touch screens work, lets figure out Pros and Cons of each of these touch screens.
Capacitive touch screen:
Pros:

Multi touch support available
Visibility good even in sunlight
Highly sensitive to finger touch leading to ease of use
Not prone to dust particles
Glossy look and feel

Cons:

Need to have atleast 5% humidity to achieve capacitive effect
More expensive than Resistive touch screen
Doesn't work with inanimate objects/fingernails/gloved fingers
Latest technology, may need to evolve a bit more!

Resistive touch screen:

Pros:

Relatively cheaper
Can operate with any pointing devices like stylus, pen, nail etc
Can operate at any level of humidity
Ease of use, as it could be used even with your winter gloves on!
Very useful for people using handwriting recongition system, due to ease of use with a stylus!
More accurate than capacitive touch screen!
Old technology and hence more reliable!

Cons:

Multi touch support not available. Though technology did evolve after some modifications with the existing resistive touch screen circuitry, its still not 100% developed yet!
Highly sensitive. As it can operate with almost any sort of pointing devices, can be more vulnerable with dust particles!
Poor visibility in sunlight, mostly due to multiple layers reflecting light!
Screen, being sensitive at the upper layer, can be more vulnerable to scratches!

So, now that you know the difference between Capacitive touch screen and a resistive touch screen, along with some of its associated pros and cons of each of them, you should now be in a better position to judge which touch screen might be suitable for you!

There’s no denying that the Android operating system provides an amazing amount of flexibility, power, and customization options for smart phone users. But with all that authority comes some responsibility. If you’re not proactive, certain apps and widgets can gobble up system resources. Here are some quick and easy tips—and apps—to help put some pep back into your Android phone.

Kill Apps Running in the Background
Besides taking up memory, many apps continue to operate behind the scenes when not being used, eating up precious CPU cycles. Blow those apps away within the Android Settings menu. The latest version of Android, 2.3 (Gingerbread), allows for easier app killing, though at press time only the Samsung Galaxy S 4G was lucky enough to run it. Alternatively, special task killer apps such as Advanced Task Killer streamline the process.

• From the home screen, hit the Menu button
• Tap Settings > Applications and select Manage Applications
• Hit the tab labelled Running
• Tap the app you’d like to kill and select the Force Stop option

Monitor Suspect Apps
Some apps can be particularly problematic. Either they ping the network often, single-handedly dragging down handset performance, or perhaps they just won’t quit, starting up when your phone boots and coming back to life like the undead after being killed by task manager software. Even worse, they may be guilty of both sins; social media apps such as Tweetdeck have been known to afflict older Android devices.
To find out which apps are running, as before navigate to Settings > Applications > Running services. If possible, try uninstalling the suspicious software and observe whether performance improves. A more advanced solution is to install third-party apps to monitor software behavior. For instance, the Watchdog app from Zomut will alert users to oddly behaving software so they can be targeted for elimination.

Remove Unused Apps
The simplest way to provide a speed boost to your Android phone is to get rid of unnecessary apps. Most applications take up some amount of internal memory, and, as a general rule, the less memory a phone has, the slower it gets. If you haven’t used an app in the last few months—especially a free one—chances are you can do without it.
Removing apps is easily accomplished from the Android Marketplace app:
• Tap MyApps, then the app in question
• Select Uninstall
You can also remove apps via Android Settings > Applications > Manage Applications:
• Under the default downloaded tab (far left), select your app

Transfer Installed Software from Windows PC to another new Computer

Generally, the problem comes when you’ve to format and then get those programs again by manually, which is somewhat tiring. Plus you miss out on some of them to install. But this problem is no more because of this small yet perfect utility to transfer your programs to your new OS.

This PickMeApp utility is worth for saving your time getting your installed programs into your new PC/Laptop from your old OS or another PC.

What it does?

It captures the programs you’ve installed and make the package in the default Download directory in your system. Although it doesn’t capture programs like Adobe flash or any default Apps that are associated with the system languages so its bit of annoying but not a big deal. You can get those manually.
This utility has helped me to install Adobe Reader which cannot be installed in HP mini directly as it always gives the Installer error. Its just an observation that I am sharing with you. You might have come across with this error in your Netbook.
Another point is this PickMeApp doesn’t captures your personal data related to those programs. As I’ve captured TweetDeck to see if its able to get my account details and all, but sadly it didn’t. How to Move Installed Windows Programs to another Computer

Now, I am going to tell you the exact procedure to get your programs into another PC.
Step 1 : Tick the programs you want to capture.
As I’ve already selected those programs so its not showing Tick over them ergo this is where you’ve to select your programs that you want in your PC. After selecting press the Capture button in the middle of it. Let the process complete and then it will show you the list of captured programs.
Step 2 : Making the Package

Here is the list of captured Apps. Now all you’ve to do is to copy down the package which is probably saved in your download directory.
Step 3: Deploy the Package to new Computer
Get that package into another PC and start PickMeApp. NO NEED TO INSTALL !
It will automatically read the installed programs and the captured programs from your Package. You can select which programs should be installed or in the middle you can choose the Install Package to install all the programs. Once again it doesn’t save your personal data related to the software. So you will have to get it manually.

Install Windows 8 using Bootable VHD without Formatting [Guide]

If you are still left who hasn’t tried Windows 8 yet. Then, Installing Windows 8 using VHD (Virtual Hard Disk). Virtual Hard Disk is a single file stored on current Windows 7 system and lets you dual boot Windows 8.

I know there are some working tricks already mentioned to install Widows 8 via VHD, but I am going through step-by-step as how I actually installed it without formatting my system. Little problems came during the process or I should say Doubts, that is what I am clearing here so you can get it installed without any risk to be taken during the process.

Windows 8 is compatible with Netbooks with Intel Atom processor. I have installed it in my HP mini and its working Smoothly. That will be discussed later in the next post. Lets begin the installation of Windows 8. Its simple but I need your full attention as a small mistake can cause serious damage to your Data in the HDD.

How to Install Windows 8 as Dual Boot using VHD

1. Create bootable USB

I am sure you know this procedure to create a Bootable USB drive. It’s straightforward using Windows 7 USB DVD Tool. You need a 4 GB USB flash drive. You can make Windows 8 Bootable USB Pendrive easily with SBB Tool
2. Create VHD

After creating Bootable USB drive of Windows 8, Go to Disk Management [Right click on My Computer and click on Manage] then at the right side More Options and Create VHD. Now create a folder in your drive where at least 30 GB memory is free. It actually uses around 5 GB of space so don’t panic just do the steps as I have shown above.
Must select the Dynamically Expanding, it means that windows 8 will use only the space which is needed, rest will be free to use. After creating folder in your drive, don’t browse it. Just put the exact path for your VHD file. Its not important to just put it in a folder but its for the safety of your VHD file.

If you are right with the process, you must see the Unallocated space in Disk Management.
Okay now after this process, Restart you system and select USB as your first boot device.
3 : Attach VHD

After getting the installation screen, Do not select any drive ! Press SHIFT+F10 You will have a command prompt. Now put commands without any typo errors.
1 : DISKPART> select vdisk file=H:\win8\win8.vhd
2 : DISKPART> attach vdisk

Drive letter “H” may vary in your case.
After putting these commands, your command prompt must look like the Picture shown above. Here you are done. Now just go to the installation window and Hit refresh. It may take a few seconds but after that it will show you the Unallocated Drive. Select it and make a new partition. Click next to start installation.
Its a fully working way of installing Windows 8 & must follow the steps I have given. If any doubts leave your comments.
Note: When I can do it, you can also follow the steps accordingly and install Windows 8 VHD. My steps are correct and refers to what I implemented but Error may be sometimes on your side so be precise while commenting to get accurate solution.

Uninstall Windows 8 by removing VHD and get back Windows 7 Boot [Guide]

Out of curiosity, many of you have installed Windows 8 Bootable VHD. If you are already played enough around and claim back the space taken up by the installation and continue work with Windows 7 normally then, here is a guide to uninstall Windows 8 by removing VHD.

So lets just focus on the topic as to How to remove Windows 8 installed VHD file without affecting your System or HDD. It’s a tried and tested procedure so let’s go step by step and follow the article below to uninstall Windows 8 VHD.

1. Change Default OS to Windows 7

As you can see above, the screenshots are showing the Boot Menu of Windows 8. Here you have to change the default OS as windows 7 instead of Windows 8 Developer Preview. Either way, even if you are keeping your Windows 8 though I will recommend you to keep Windows 7 Boot loader, as its faster.
By this process your system will now be reading the boot menu of windows 7. Here we are almost done. Start Windows 7 and then restart your System. You must have to do this or it will not save the Boot Menu settings that you just changed. Now check which boot menu does your system load. It should load Windows 7 classic Boot Loader.
Windows 7 Boot Menu looks like this

If you are getting this Boot Menu then you are free to do the next step which is very easy, that is to Delete the VHD file in you HDD
After Deleting the VHD file your space is recovered now. You can check it in Disk-Management, there will not be any Unallocated Partition.

Removing the Windows 8 Developer Preview Boot Entry

Go to Start menu and search “msconfig” open it and you will have this Window as I have shown above. There you can see Windows 7 is my Default OS. You just have to select Windows Developer Preview and delete it. Select windows 7 as default if its not showing before deleting. Apply the settings and OK. Now restart your System and you will have a HDD free from Windows 8.

Though the screenshots refer to Windows 8 Developer Build but it is expected that the procedure should work on all future build of Windows 8 as the concept of VHD remains same.

Note : This is the easiest way to remove Windows 8 installed VHD file. But before doing this process, you must have to define your default OS as windows 7 to your system.

Does Defragmenting Shorten HDDs Life? Are Files Deleted?

Defragmenting your hard drive is like having a group of people who go to your office over the weekend to rearrange each file that is out of place in consolidated and organize files again. This way, when you arrive on Monday morning, everything will be in its place.

Then when you need a certain file, all you need do is consult the index, take the file and use it. No need to twist around the office looking for a particular document that was lost.

On the computer, the process is similar. Defragmenting organizes files so that the system knows exactly where each of them greatly increase access speed.
But doing it very often can wear this piece of hardware?
If you are using a normal hard disk, NO. In fact the process may even increase the life of the hard disk, since the HD’s are disks that contain the files physically. Thus in order to open, read heads should be directed to the position of the item and more fragmentation, more readers will have to move.
A normal hard drive has a seek time of about 16 ms. If a file is fragmented into 20 parts, the read heads will take approximately 320 ms to effectively carry all parts of the document.
And, Defragmenting has nothing to do with cleaning up of files so none of your data is lost or no file is deleted.

Do not Defragment SSD? Why?

Machines with Solid State Drives (SSD acronym in English) are increasingly present in the market. Because it uses a different technology common hard drives (flash memory in Logar magnetic disk), this type of device does not need to be defragmented ever. They work exceptionally random access operations and therefore the organization of data is not really useful for SSD’s.
With respect to the recording limit, an SSD has a life expectancy of about 10,000 read/write cycles before it becomes unusable. That is, a frequent defragmentation, as well as bring no benefits to this type of disc, so you better save time by avoiding it.
Operating systems had to adapt to this new technology. For Windows 7, it is sufficiently “smart” and automatically disable the feature when identifying the disks and partitions as SSD’s.

Whether it's tweaks to get the desktop the way you want it, tips for troubleshooting or ways to squeeze more performance from Windows 7, we've got it covered.

1. Problem Steps Recorder
As the local PC guru you're probably very used to friends and family asking for help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe what's going on. It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.
When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If they then work through whatever they're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when they're finished, ready for emailing to you. It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.
2. Burn images
Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created.
3. Create and mount VHD files
Microsoft's Virtual PC creates its virtual machine hard drives in VHD files, and Windows 7 can now mount these directly so you can access them in the host system. Click Start, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter, then click Action > Attach VHD and choose the file you'd like to mount. It will then appear as a virtual drive in Explorer and can be accessed, copied or written just like any other drive.
Click Action > Create VHD and you can now create a new virtual drive of your own (right-click it, select Initialise Disk, and after it's set up right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to set this up). Again, you'll be left with a virtual drive that behaves just like any other, where you can drag and drop files, install programs, test partitioning software or do whatever you like. But it's actually just this VHD file on your real hard drive which you can easily back up or share with others. Right-click the disk (that's the left-hand label that says "Disk 2" or whatever) and select Detach VHD to remove it.
The command line DISKPART utility has also been upgraded with tools to detach a VHD file, and an EXPAND command to increase a virtual disk's maximum size. Don't play around with this unless you know what you're doing, though - it's all too easy to trash your system.
4. Troubleshoot problems
If some part of Windows 7 is behaving strangely, and you don't know why, then click Control Panel > Find and fix problems (or 'Troubleshooting') to access the new troubleshooting packs. These are simple wizards that will resolve common problems, check your settings, clean up your system and more.
5. Startup repair
If you've downloaded Windows 7 (and even if you haven't) it's a good idea to create a system repair disc straight away in case you run into problems booting the OS later on. Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc, and let Windows 7 build a bootable emergency disc. If the worst does happen then it could be the only way to get your PC running again.
6. Take control
Tired of the kids installing dubious software or running applications you'd rather they left alone? AppLocker is a new Windows 7 feature that ensures users can only run the programs you specify. Don't worry, that's easier to set up than it sounds: you can create a rule to allow everything signed by a particular publisher, so choose Microsoft, say, and that one rule will let you run all signed Microsoft applications. Launch GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker to get a feel for how this works.
7. Calculate more
At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more.
Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value, then - there are some very powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

8. Switch to a projector
Windows 7 now provides a standard way to switch your display from one monitor to another, or a projector - just press Win+P or run DisplaySwitch.exe and choose your preferred display. (This will have no effect if you've only one display connected.)
9. Get a power efficiency report
If you have a laptop, you can use the efficiency calculator to get Windows 7 to generate loads of useful information about its power consumption. Used in the right way, this can help you make huge gains in terms of battery life and performance. To do this you must open a command prompt as an administrator by typing 'cmd' in Start Search, and when the cmd icon appears, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
Then at the command line, just type in 'powercfg -energy' (without quotes) and hit Return, and Windows 7 will scan your system looking for ways to improve power efficiency. It will then publish the results in an HTML file, usually in the System32 folder. Just follow the path it gives you to find your report.
10. Understanding System Restore
Using System Restore in previous versions of Windows has been something of a gamble. There's no way of telling which applications or drivers it might affect - you just have to try it and see.
Windows 7 is different. Right-click Computer, select Properties > System Protection > System Restore > Next, and choose the restore point you'd like to use. Click the new button to 'Scan for affected programs' and Windows will tell you which (if any) programs and drivers will be deleted or recovered by selecting this restore point.
11. Set the time zone
System administrators will appreciate the new command line tzutil.exe utility, which lets you set a PC's time zone from scripts. If you wanted to set a PC to Greenwich Mean Time, for instance, you'd use the command
tzutil /s "gmt standard time"
The command "tzutil /g" displays the current time zone, "tzutil /l" lists all possible time zones, and "tzutil /?" displays details on how the command works.
12. Calibrate your screen
The colours you see on your screen will vary depending on your monitor, graphics cards settings, lighting and more, yet most people use the same default Windows colour profile. And that means a digital photo you think looks perfect might appear very poor to everybody else. Fortunately Windows 7 now provides a Display Colour Calibration Wizard that helps you properly set up your brightness, contrast and colour settings, and a ClearType tuner to ensure text is crisp and sharp. Click Start, type DCCW and press Enter to give it a try.
13. Clean up Live Essentials
Installing Windows Live Essentials will get you the new versions of Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and others - great. Unfortunately it also includes other components that may be unnecessary, but if you like to keep a clean system then these can be quickly removed.
If you left the default "Set your search provider" option selected during installation, for instance, Windows Live will install Choice Guard, a tool to set your browser home page and search engine, and prevent other programs from changing them. If this causes problems later, or you just decide you don't need it, then Choice Guard may be removed by clicking Start, typing msiexec /x and pressing [Enter].
Windows Live Essentials also adds an ActiveX Control to help upload your files to Windows Live SkyDrive, as well as the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, which makes it easier to manage and switch between multiple Windows Live accounts. If you're sure you'll never need either then remove them with the Control Panel "Uninstall a Program" applet.
14. Add network support
By default Windows Live MovieMaker won't let you import files over a network, but a quick Registry tweak will change this. Run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker, add a DWORD value called AllowNetworkFiles and set it to 1 to add network support.
15. Activate XP mode
If you've old but important software that no longer runs under Windows 7, then you could try using XP Mode, a virtual copy of XP that runs in a window on your Windows 7 desktop. But there's a big potential problem, as XP Mode only works with systems that have hardware virtualisation (AMD-V or Intel VT) built-in and turned on. If you've a compatible CPU then this may just be a matter of enabling the option in your BIOS set-up program, however some high profile brands, including Sony Vaio, disable the setting for "security reasons". And that blocks XP Mode from working, too.
One solution has emerged, but it's a little risky, as essentially you'll have to alter a byte in your laptop firmware and hope this doesn't have any unexpected side-effects. Gulp. If you're feeling brave then take a look at the Feature Enable Blog for the details, but don't blame us if it goes wrong.
A safer approach might be to use VirtualBox, a virtualisation tool that doesn't insist on hardware support, but then you will need to find a licensed copy of XP (or whatever other Windows version your software requires) for its virtual machine.
16. Enable virtual Wi-Fi
Windows 7 includes a little-known new feature called Virtual Wi-Fi, which effectively turns your PC or laptop into a software-based router. Any other Wi-Fi-enabled devices within range - a desktop, laptop, an iPod perhaps - will "see" you as a new network and, once logged on, immediately be able to share your internet connection.
This will only work if your wireless adapter driver supports it, though, and not all do. Check with your adapter manufacturer and make sure you've installed the very latest drivers to give you the best chance.
Once you have driver support then the easiest approach is to get a network tool that can set up virtual Wi-Fi for you. Virtual Router (below) is free, easy to use and should have you sharing your internet connection very quickly.

17. Recover locked-up apps
If an application locks up under a previous version of Windows then there was nothing you could do about it. A new Windows 7 option, however, can not only explain the problem, but may get your program working again without any loss of data.
When the lockup occurs, click Start, type RESMON and click the RESMON.EXE link to launch the Resource Monitor.
Find your frozen process in the CPU pane (it should be highlighted in red), right-click it and select Analyze Wait Chain.
If you see at least two processes in the list, then the lowest, at the end of the tree, is the one holding up your program. If it's not a vital Windows component, or anything else critical, then save any work in other open applications, check the box next to this process, click End Process, and your locked-up program will often spring back to life.

18. Fault-Tolerant Help
Windows 7 includes a new feature called the Fault Tolerant Help (FTH), a clever technology that looks out for unstable processes, detects those that may be crashing due to memory issues, and applies several real-time fixes to try and help. If these work, that's fine - if not, the fixes will be undone and they won't be applied to that process again.
While this is very good in theory, it can leave you confused as some applications crash, then start working (sometimes) for no apparent reason. So if you'd like to check if the FTH is running on your PC, launch REGEDIT, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FTH - any program currently being protected by the FTH will be listed in the State key.
Experienced users may also try tweaking the FTH settings to catch more problems, and perhaps improve system stability. A post on Microsoft's Ask The Performance Team blog (bit.ly/d1JStu) explains what the various FTH Registry keys mean.

Windows 7's location-aware printing allows the operating system to automatically switch your default printer as you move from one network to another.
To set this up, first click Start, type Devices, and click the Devices and Printers link.
Select a printer and click Manage Default Printers (this is only visible on a mobile device, like a laptop - you won't see it on a PC).
Choose the "Change my default printer when I change networks" option, select a network, the default printer you'd like to use, and click Add.
Repeat the process for other networks available, and pick a default printer for each one.

Sharing your Windows internet connection via software has traditionally been a tricky business.
There are programs that can help you do it, but they're often awkward to set up, and prone to complicated security and reliability issues, so most people don't even try.
But that could all be about to change, thanks to a new Windows 7 feature called Virtual Wi-Fi.
The idea is a simple one: the operating system can virtualise any compatible wireless adapter, to make it appear as though you've as many additional adapters as you need.
The effect is dramatic. Once it's set up, then any Wi-Fi compatible device that can connect to you - another desktop, laptop, or an iPod Touch, say - will immediately be able to get online, by sharing your internet connection through a duplicate of your wireless adapter.
Getting this working isn't too difficult, either, as long as you can get over the first hurdle: finding a virtual Wi-Fi-compatible driver for your wireless adapter.
Intel's latest 32-bit and 64-bit drivers now include support, as do various others for Atheros, Broadcom, Realtek and other big players, but these don't apply to every chipset. Check the support site for your wireless adapter to see what's available.
If you're in luck and manage to find and install an up-to-date Windows 7 driver for your adapter, then the next step is to set it up, and for that you'll need an elevated command prompt. Click Start, type CMD, right-click the Cmd.exe link and select "Run as Administrator".
Now type the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword
and press [Enter]. Replace "MyNet" with the name you'd like to use for your custom network, and "MyPassword" with a password that's a little harder to guess.
Still at the command line, type
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
and press [Enter] to fire up the virtual adapter.
Now click Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change Adapter Settings, right-click your internet connection and select Properties. Click the Sharing tab, check "Allow other network users to connect...", choose your virtual Wi-Fi adaptor - and that's it.
Any nearby Wi-Fi enabled device should see a new network appear with the SSID you defined above. They'll be able to connect to it using your password, and can then immediately share your internet connection.
While it's worth knowing how to do this manually, if it's something you do often then you'll probably prefer a simpler solution.
You could speed things up a little by creating a batch file to run the netsh commands, perhaps, but for a really easy life we'd recommend you install Virtual Router. It's compact, free, and will automate the whole process for you with the minimum of hassle.

USB keys are now a days not just a popular way to sneak data out from companies, unhappy employees may use USB ports for delivering trojans or spyware into the company networks.
Now some smart admins disable usb drive by changing the BIOS settings and then lock the BIOS using passwords. Some not so-smart admins fix tapes over the USB ports to prevent employees from inserting any USB device into their computer.

When you do this, the USB storage device does not work when the user connects the device to the computer.
However, both these approaches can prove to be counter-productive as your staff can no longer use USB keyboards, wireless mouse, digital cameras, camcorders, scanners, printers or even USB microphones to their computers.
So a more reasonable option for sysadmins is to disable write access to USB port so that data files cannot be written to the mass storage device. The USB thumb drive will be read-only.
Open the Windows Registry and open the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\ Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Now add a new DWORD called WriteProtect and put the value as 0 to disable write privileges to the USB port. To reverse the step, either delete the WriteProtect REG_DWORD or toggle the value to 1 which will enable the port.
Remember that the above trick works only with Windows XP SP2.

Sometimes I connect my phone to my computer to save pictures and get some music on the phone so when I realized I couldn’t exchange files I got a bit worried and started to do some research I finally found a package that can be used with phones regardless the connection you use (Bluetoot®, USB or IR).
I installed this 2 packages<

When AMD and Microsoft were not able to increase the CPU power significantly any more, they simply added more CPU’s, that’s why we have dual and quad-core CPU’s nowadays. So, what you can do is to get more RAM. However, we don’t want to buy anything new, because we’re on a low budget. Although, I am sure that you own an USB-stick , right?
Since Windows Vista there is a little feature, that most people do NOT use effectively. To be honest with you, I haven’t used it myself and I might run into errors while I try to show it to you. The feature is called ReadyBoost and can give you up to 6% more performance. This depends on the amount of RAM you have. Low-End system with less RAM will see a great performance increase and many applications will load faster. Since Windows 7 there is no longer a memory limit of 4GB and you can use several devices for ReadyBoost.
1. Plugin your USB-stick
2. Move all your files on that stick into a folder on your hard drive to make room.
3. Start the Explorer (Windows + E), do a right-click on your drive and select properties.
4. Open the tab ReadyBoost and pick Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Click on Apply.
5. Repeat the steps 1-4 for all other devices (unlimited)

Ok, so we added a ReadyBoost device. Let’s see what it looks like:

On the drive you can find a cache file now that should be pretty big. I still had some other files on the stick, because this is my MP3-player.

What’s next? Right, did it really improve my performance or is a USB-stick (not even USB2.0) insufficient? First of all, I did a check to see if the ReadyBoost drive is working.

Speed test your SD Card, CF Card, Flash Drive, HDD

Next, I downloaded a tool called “Crystal Disk Mark”, which is pretty cool to speed test your sd cards, flash drives and any other disk. In the meantime, I added my USB2.0 Card Reader, one 2GB CF Card and one 2GB SD Card (lucky me), because I was pretty sure that my MP3-Player wouldn’t perform very well.

Conclusion? The SD card is performing really well and is my best choice for a ReadyBoost drive. Considering that I only have 2GB of RAM (dual channel), I think that this can increase my browsing speed. I usually have a lot of open tabs in firefox and as you might know firefox is eating a lot of resources, therefore I’m pretty happy about this setup now.

Can ReadyBoost really help me to boost my performance?

Is the performance boost notable? Well, it might be a bit early to comment on that, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that this is a good choice for low-end systems and systems with less RAM. On systems with more RAM than 1GB it will be only notable if you run some resource-hungry programs or programs that run a lot of small, random I/Os.

Nautilus is a file manager which provides a simple and integrated way to manage your files and applications, and you can use it to do the following:

* Create folders and documents

    * Search and manage your files
    * Display your files and folder
    * Run scripts and launch applications
    * Customize the appearance of files and folders
    * Open special locations on your computer
    * Write data to a CD or DVD

* Install and remove fonts
The file manager lets you organize your files into folders. Folders can contain files as well as other folders. Using folders helps you find your files more easily.
I am not going to explore all Nautilus's features simply because it is a pretty straight forward program to use. There are many secrets about Nautilus normal users might not be familiar with them; therefore, in this article, I will try to shed light on some of them. Although I am using Nautilus on Ubuntu 9.10 in this tutorial, everything mentioned will be valid also on most of other distributions like Fedora, Mandriva or OpenSUSE.

Location barPrivacy Information

The location bar is a very powerful tool for navigating your computer. It can appear in three different ways according to your selection. In all three configurations, the location bar always contains the following items.
Zoom buttons: Enable you to change the size of items in Nautilus.
View as a drop-down list: Enables you to choose how to show items. There are three types: icon view, list view or compact view.

By default, location bar shows a row of buttons representing the current location's hierarchy, with a button for each containing folder.
If you know where you want to go, you can change to Text Location Bar by clicking on the pencil icon, press Ctrl+L or choose Go ▸ Location; then press Enter. The path field automatically completes what you are typing when there is only one possibility. To accept the suggested completion, press Tab.

Searching For Files

The file manager includes an easy and simple way to search for your files and folders. To begin a search press Ctrl+F or select the Search toolbar button. The search bar should appear as shown on the next figure.
Enter characters present in the name or contents of the file or folder you wish to find and press Enter.

Show hidden files

By default, Nautilus does not display certain system and backup files in folders. This prevents accidental modification or deletion, which can impair the operation of your computer, and also reduces clutter in locations such as your Home Folder. So, and to prevent all these, Nautilus does not display:
    * Hidden files, whose filename begins with a period (.),
    * Backup files, whose filename ends with a tilde (~)
    * Files that are listed in a particular folder's .hidden file.
You may hide or show hidden files in a particular folder by selecting View ▸ Show Hidden Files.

Change Nautilus's background

Many people don't know that you can change Nautilus's background to add a beautiful touch to browsing files.
To change the background of a window, pane, or panel, perform the following steps:

1.Choose Edit ▸ Backgrounds and Emblems in any file manager window. The Backgrounds and Emblems dialog is displayed.

2.Click the Patterns button or the Colors button to see a list of background patterns or background colors you can use.
3. To change the background, drag a pattern or color to the desired window, pane, or panel. To reset the background, drag the Reset entry to the desired window, pane, or panel.

You can add a new pattern to the list by clicking the Add a New Pattern button when the patterns are selected. Locate an image file in the file chooser dialog and click Open. The image file will appear in the list of patterns you can use. I added an image as a new pattern and this is the result:

Spatial mode

In Spatial mode, The file manager window represents a particular folder. Opening a folder opens the new window for that folder. Each time you open a particular folder, you will find its window displayed in the same place on the screen and the same size as the last time you viewed it (this is the reason for the name 'spatial mode'.

Spatial mode is the default in GNOME but Ubuntu doesn't enable it by default. To enable it choose Edit ▸ Preferences.

set Nautilus to always use it by selecting (or deselected) Always open in browser windows in the Behavior tab.

Single or Double click to open items

In Windows systems, the default way of opening items is by a double click. However, in Nautilus, you can choose a single click or a double to open items in by choose either way in Behavior tab (see the above picture).

Add more power to Nautilus by scripts

Sometimes you need to edit a file with root privileges and you are too reluctant to open the terminal; therefore, don't even bother yourself because Nautilus provides you with a way to do that by scripts.
A Nautilus Script is an executable file, written in a scripting language, which can perform some function on files or folders selected from within the Nautilus file manager window.
To add a new script, just copy it to this path : “/home/(your account name)/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts” copy the path and past it in Location text bar then press Enter.
This site gives you many scripts you can choose from which might meet your needs. I've picked three scripts that seem useful for most users: Open as root, Open Terminal Here and root-nautilus-here. You can download them from here.

Changing the Icon for a File or Folder

To change the icon that represents an individual file or folder, perform the following steps:
1.Select the file or folder that you want to change.
2.Choose File ▸ Properties. The properties window for the item is displayed.
3.On the Basic tabbed section, click on the current Icon. A Select custom icon dialog is displayed.
4.Use the Select custom icon dialog to choose the icon to represent the file or folder.

Changing Permissions

You can change the permissions by using terminal's commends for a short way but this way seems difficult for those who came from Windows environment. So, you may choose the easy way that Nautilus provides, just the way windows does it.
To change the permissions of a file, perform the following steps:
1.Select the file that you want to change.
2. Choose File ▸ Properties. The properties window for the item is displayed.
3. Click on the Permissions tab.
4.To change the file's group, choose from the groups the user belongs to in the drop-down selector.
5.For each of “the owner”, “the group”, and “all other users”, you can specify for each file one of the following permissions:
   None: No access to the file is possible. (You can't set this for the owner.)
   Read-only: The users can open a file to see its contents, but not making any changes.
   Read and write: Normal access to a file is possible: it can be opened and saved
6.To allow a file to be run as a program, tick Execute button.

Folders have more options in permissions tab. For instance, folder access permissions :
For each of the owner, the group, and all other users, choose from these folder access permissions:
None: No access to the folder is possible. (You can't set this for the owner.)
List files only: users can see the items in the folder, but cannot open any of them.
Access files: Items in the folder can be opened and modified, provided their own permissions allow it.
Create and delete files: The user can create new files and delete files in the folder, in addition to being able to access existing files.
To set permissions for all the items contained in a folder, set the File Access and Execute properties and click on Apply permissions to enclosed files.

Changing “ Open with” default application

You can open an item like png files with many applications like gimp, F-spot or even firefox, and to choose the right application, right click on the file and choose open with:

To Choose which application is used to open an item, and others of the same type.

1.Select the file that you want to change.
2.Choose File ▸ Properties. The properties window for the item is displayed.
3.Click on the Open with tab.
4.Select which application do you like to open that type of files.

Let me also tell you that this trick was first discovered by n. But, unfortunately the service stopped working within a couple of months as Mytoday server was overloaded. Now we are glad to inform you that, this service could be reactivated using Google SMS channels.

Now you would surely say that Orkut already have such a feature available officially. But let me clear this point, this feature is made available by Orkut with some charges, but using this trick you can enjoy free scrap alerts on your mobile without even wasting a penny. Unlike the previous case.. This service works with the help of Google SMS channels and Orkutfeeds.
Just follow these simple steps:

Step 1:
First of all you have to get the feed url of your Orkut profile by using orkutfeeds.com.
For this, just open your Orkut profile and copy the home page link (In my case it is http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Profile.aspx?uid=17131020411019753927).

Step 2:
Now go to orkutfeeds.com and paste your Orkut profile link (already generated on step 1

After this, just hit the subscribe button and you’ll be provided with your Orkut profile feed url (In my case, it is http://www.orkutfeeds.com/feed.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.orkut.co.in%2FProfile.aspx%3Fuid%3D17131020411019753927).

Step 3:
Also add “#both” at the end of the above URL so that you can get messages of the scrap as well.

Fill all the required details and feed URL of your Orkut page (refer step 2) on the ‘RSS/Atom feed’ form and finally hit the ‘create channel’ button.

That’s it! Now you’ll be getting scrap notifications via SMS for life

Note:

For this trick to work on locked scrapbooks, you must add this Orkutfeeds bot as your friend.
Scrap notification are delayed for 2-4 hours depending on the Google’s server traffic.
Unlike the trick discovered previously, only the sender name of a scrap will be notified.
We have worked out to get full scrap messages as well, just follow the STEP 3 mentioned above

Guide to Install Snow Leopard in VMWARE

Yes it’s possible to install and play with Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 in VMWARE Windows edition. Technically it’s not possible to install OS X natively in VMWARE but a little trickery can do wonder. According to iHackintosh post a few modifications to the .vmx file and use a modified install disk as this will save a lot of trouble. Let me clear Apple licensing does not allow for the virtualization of OSX Client on any hardware and only allows for the virtualization OSX server on Apple hardware. Anything else is in violation of the license agreement.

Requirements :

VMWARE 7 and Windows XP, Vista or 7
Download VMware Player
Retail DVD of Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6
Intel Based Machine, AMD isn’t supported.
Patience, a Cup of coffee or Energy drink whatever you like.
A pre-made Snow Leopard VMDK, dariwn_snow.iso Download (Rapidshare), (Rapidshare 1)(Mediafire) Or (Megaupload)

Instructions :

Step One : Launch VMWARE Workstation and load the .vmx that came with the package you downloaded above. Now edit virtual machine settings for advance options.

Step Two : Edit the VMWARE settings eg: Memory, Processor, Networking Adaptors etc. Select CD/DVD drive options and in Connection select Use ISO image file and browse the Darwin_Snow.iso

Step Three : Now power on the virtual machine and keep your finger on F8 key.

Hit F8 very quickly on your Keyboard you will be prompted with the following screen

Step Four : Like Boot 132 method now you need to replace the boot cd with the Snow Leopard Retail Install DVD. Right click on the CD icon in bottom of the VMWARE windows and click on Settings option.

Now change the options from ISO image to use physical drive and make sure you have Retail DVD already installed.

Save and Exit Step Five : Now navigate to boot screen and press “C” on your keyboard to select “Boot DVD”, again press F8 for advance options and type -v at the boot prompt then hit enter for booting with verbose mode.
Step Six : Now wait for 2-3 minutes and your Installation screen will appear. Now you can install Snow Leopard as usual. Before choosing the destination open Disk Utility and erase your Vmware HDD in to “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” format type. Under customization deselect printer drivers and language translations for trouble free installation.Once installation finishes your virtual machine will reboot automatically.
Step Seven : Follow Step Two again “Select CD/DVD drive options and in Connection select Use ISO image file and browse the Darwin_Snow.iso” now you can boot in to Snow Leopard you may need to force restart 2-3 times if Kernel Panic happens, once machine boot successfully you can set your preference etc.

To access CMD Prompt & Registry Editor:-

The easiest way is, create a text file (or) Notepad and write "COMMAND" in it and then saving it as "cmd.bat". This will give you access to Command Prompt by a double click.

If this doesn't work at all or you need to allow the use of REGEDIT and CMD you can just make your own registry file and run it on the computer. This will give you the rights to use them. Simply write the below lines in a text file (or) Notepad.

How to install codecs to play all video,audio formats in fedora

Fedora comes with a ton of software but there are still plenty of packages of interest to most users that are not included for a variety of reasons. This is where you find the MP3 plug-in and a ton of other packages.

These instructions can vary depending on 32bit or 64bit architecture. If there is a difference it will be noted. If you don't know which architecture you're running you can run the following command:

$ uname -m

It will shows like this:
x86_64
...or...
i686

Before you add repositories it's probably a good idea to make sure your system is fully updated first. At this point I'm prefering the Livna repository as it's the most useful and complete but at some point I might need to add another one for things that are lacking there. The easiest way to get started is to install the livna-release packages:

# rpm -ihv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

Upgrading from previous Fedora

There are a few things you need to do when upgrading from a previous version of Fedora. This was tested only with Fedora 7 so older versions may not work quite as easily. The first thing you want to do is upgrade the repository package for the newer version.

# rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

And finally you're going to need to do an update of the whole system. This will most likely pick up official Fedora updates as well as updated packages from the Livna repository. This might take a while.

# yum -y update

Install MP3 Plug-in

Since you've been following along this next step is about as easy as it gets. Just use yum to automatically install the MP3 plug-ins for xmms and Rhythmbox like this:

# yum -y install xmms xmms-mp3 xmms-faad2 gstreamer-plugins-ugly \
gstreamer-plugins-bad libmad libid3tag

While you're here you might as well install music player Banshee:

# yum -y install banshee

The -y flag is to automatically answer yes to any question. If you want to be able to say no you can ignore that flag.

While you're there I highly recommend the grip CD ripper which supports both MP3 and Ogg formats. Once again installation is quite simple:

# yum -y install grip

This will install grip.

this will install flash plugins to mozilla and others.

Install DVD player

Currently I find the DVD player that works best is the Xine Multimedia Player which is found in the Livna repository so installing it is just this simple:

# yum -y install xine xine-lib xine-skins xine-lib-extras-nonfree libdvdcss

This will install the xine DVD/VCD/CD player. Now to get xine to automatically play a DVD upon insertion instead of the Totem player which can't actually play DVDs, you can simply use the gconftool-2 utility as follows:

$ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoplay_dvd_command \
'xine --auto-play --auto-scan dvd' --type='string'

Install MPlayer Media Player

At some point you're probably going to want to play a QuickTime, AVI or ASF file so you'll want the MPlayer media player. Fortunately with the FreshRpms repositories it's also very easy to download and install. Then you can go ahead and install mplayer and all it's dependencies:

# yum -y install mplayer mplayer-gui mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts mplayerplug-in

This command line will download the whole kit and kaboodle, command line utilities, plug-ins, etc. If you want to play content from a command line you will want to use the gmplayer version which will include a skin-able control panel. Restart your web browser after that whole mess is done installing and you'll also have a plug-in for Mozilla so you can play embedded content. While you're at it be sure to configure mplayer to use the Pulse sound system rather than the default. It just works better. Edit the file ~/.mplayer/config and add the following line:

ao=pulse

You can enable support for mms streaming by opening Firefox and click on the special URL about:config. Right click on the list and choose New then choose String. For the preference name enter network.protocol-handler.app.mms then for the string value enter gmplayer.

Special 64-bit instructions:

The above installs the 64-bit version of everything but because your other plug-ins are 32-bits you need to run the 32-bit version of Firefox, which won't be able to use the 64-bit version of the plug-in you just installed. The plug-in can use the 64-bit version of the mplayer application just fine so all you need to do then is to install the 32-bit mplayerplug-in plus a dependency it requires. If you know of any easier way to do this please let me know below.

And finally you'll probably also want some additional codecs to play all that proprietary video that seems to have infected the Internet.

Go to the MPlayer Download page and find the Binaries Codec Package section then follow the link for codecs directory. There you will grab the latest all codecs file. You'll need to install those files in /usr/local/lib/codecs. Here are the steps. Remember the exact file names may change at some point. If you also installed xine you will need a symlink since it expects codecs to be in a different directory.

# gtar xjvf all-20071007.tar.bz2
# mv all-20071007/* /usr/local/lib/codecs
# ln -s /usr/local/lib/codecs /usr/lib/codecs
# ln -s /usr/local/lib/codecs /usr/local/lib/win32

Install VLC (VideoLAN Client)

Multimedia can be the achilles heel of Linux, but with just a little work you should be able to play just about anything your friends can. Besides Mplayer the other great video player is called VLC. It too is trivially easy to install once you have your repositories set up:

# yum -y install vlc

Once the client and a zillion dependencies get installed you can play a huge variety of video formats easy with the command vlc

Install RealPlayer 10 Media Player

Just install it:

$ rpm -ihv RealPlayer-10.1.0.3114-20070503.i586.rpm

If you also installed Mplayer above then you will likely run into a problem where the Mplayer provided Real Media plug-in will be run instead of the one installed by the RealPlayer package. The mplayer verison of the plug-in does not work correctly in most cases and causes more problems than it solves. The only way I've found to get rid of it is to just simply delete the plug-in files:

# cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
# rm mplayerplug-in-rm.*

Install Java J2RE and Mozilla Plug-in

Fedora 8 now includes a fully open source Java implementation complete with Firefox plugin. You can verify it's there at the command line:

$ java -version

Procedure

To Disable that display:

1. Click Start->run->type regedit and Hit Enter

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop

3. Create a String Value called MinMaxClose

4. Give it a value of 1

This trick will help u in setting a pic in your folder background .

1.Go to Control panel -> Folder options -> view tab -> show hidden files

2.Uncheck the 2 boxes below it

3.Open a folder, search for a file desktop.ini

There u will have somecode like this or a bit different

4.Now add the lines below :

This is a small hack and is great if you want to customize your Yahoo Msgr window.
1. Go to Yahoo MGRs instalaltion path defaultly it will be
(eg:- c:\Program files\yahoo messenger\.......etc)

2. Find the ymsgr.ini file and open it

3.Paste the below lines at the end of last row:

That's it !
Do the same trick to change its tittle to original.

How to "Delete administrator Password" without any software

Method 1
Boot up with DOS and delete the sam.exe and sam.log files from Windows\system32\config in your hard drive. Now when you boot up in NT the password on your built-in administrator account which will be blank (i.e No password). This solution works only if your hard drive is FAT kind.

Method 2
Step 1. Put your hard disk of your computer in any other pc .Step 2. Boot that computer and use your hard disk as a secondary hard disk (D'nt boot as primary hard disk ).Step 3. Then open that drive in which the victim’s window(or your window) is installed.Step 4. Go to location windows->system32->configStep 5. And delete SAM.exe and SAM.log
Step 6. Now remove hard disk and put in your computer.
Step 7. And boot your computer :-)
